Chan Chan, Trujillo

Gain a sense of life in pre-Columbian South America by visiting Chan Chan, a World Heritage Site and one of the continent's prime archeological gems. Founded in the year 850 CE by the Chimu people, the city served as the capital of the Chimor Empire until it was conquered by the Incas in the late 15th century. At its peak, over 50,000 people lived here, making it the largest settlement on the whole South American continent. You can see the restored plazas, walls, and decorated chambers, as well as remains of the once complex irrigation system--all of which will give you an image of a highly developed urban center. Unless you're already familiar with the history of the site, try to join one of the guided tours, available in both English and Spanish.
