To witness an entire community living on islets of totora reeds, head to Uros Floating Islands. Floating atop Lake Titicaca, the 42 floating islands are home to the Uros people, who continue to live a traditional lifestyle based on fishing and bird hunting. The arrival of tourism has affected the Uros way of life, with many locals now selling handicrafts to visitors as a means of making money. Appreciate the incredible ingenuity of the locals, but don't be surprised if your visit seems less "genuine" than you expected. La visita increible, un lugar imperdible al llegar al Titicaca, orientarse bien antes de embarcarse a comprar los tickets, en temporada alta hay demasiada afluencia. more »The incredible visit, a must-see place when arriving in Titicaca, get your bearings well before embarking to buy the tickets, in high season there is too much influx.
It's interesting to see how people actually lived on the lake. But tourism seems to be their only form of income now and it kind of takes away from the experience to have people constantly asking for money. Maybe there is a way you can just spend more on the tour and have that extra money go to the people and everyone can be more pleasant.
Ever since I was 8 or 9 years old and read about these floating homes, I've wanted to visit. It was fascinating, but rather disappointing. They tried too hard, and have made it too touristy. I posted a video of some horrendous singing they did for us, and we were pressured to tip afterwards. I'm glad I went, but it was a bit of a let down. Please don't try so hard, and just be more authentic!
