Ballestas Islands, Pisco

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Pisco
Cruise around the arches and caves of Ballestas Islands while listening to the unusual choir of noisy sea lions. As you approach the high rocky islands, you'll pass a mysterious 150 m (492 ft) high geoglyph carved into the sandy hills. The origin of the geoglyph remains unknown, but some speculations say that it served as a navigational guide for ancient sailors. At the islands, watch the sea lions pushing each other around, swimming alongside your boat, and occasionally sprawling on the rocks. This important sanctuary for marine wildlife--nicknamed "the poor man's Galapagos"--also supports the Guanay cormorant, blue-footed booby, Peruvian pelican, Humboldt penguin, and Chilean flamingo.
