Moon Temple, Machu Picchu

#9 of 14 in Historic Sites in Machu Picchu
Near Machu Picchu, the remains of Moon Temple offer a fascinating look into a culture that thrived in pre-Columbian America. Constructed of stones and featuring a shallow cave with a throne cut out of a rock, the ancient structure dates back some 1,500 years and lies about 400 m (1,300 ft) below the peak of Huayna Picchu. Though its purpose remains a mystery, the temple was likely used as a royal tomb, lookout post, place of worship, and a site of ceremonial sacrifices. The steep trail leading there can be slippery, so wear shoes suitable for climbing and hiking over uneven terrain. • amazing sights and lots of fun
  • Quite hard for most people to get to I imagine but I can't recommend it enough. Probably the only place in Machu Picchu where there are hardly any tourists and you can just listen to nature in peace and quiet. If you're lucky (like me) you'll be the only one there.
