Intipuncu, Machu Picchu

#2 of 13 in Historic Sites in Machu Picchu
Must see · Lookout · Ruin
Take in the extensive views of Machu Picchu from Intipuncu, one of the city's most important archeological sites. Dedicated to Inti, the Incan sun god, the gateway once served as a part of the fortress that overlooked the roads leading to the city. Today, its vantage point offers some of the best views of all of Machu Picchu and the surrounding mountain peaks. Despite the inclining terrain, the relatively short 1.6 km (1 mi) hike over the stone-paved road from Machu Picchu to the gateway is not too difficult. The trail offers excellent views along its entire length, so even if you don't ascend the entire way, the hike remains worthwhile. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring your camera and plenty of water, and note that the path can be slippery when wet.
