Caral Peru, Lima

4.5
The site of an ancient civilization similar to Machu Picchu, Caral Peru has a similar historic significance without the huge tourist crowds. The oldest city on the continent, this ancient settlement was inhabited between approximately 2600 BC and 2000 BCE by over 3,000 inhabitants. Explore the more than 60 hectares (148 acres) of space, once home to the Norte Chico civilization, and learn about their society. A couple of hours from the big city, this makes a great day trip from Lima. If you’re driving yourself, be aware that there are tolls along the way, so be prepared with change. Alternatively, you can go with an organized tour group, which generally includes a guide to teach you more about the history and significance of the site. • A good 3-4 hours from Lima. For a day trip, probably the only sensible option to get here is by either hiring a car, taking a cab or booking a private tour. Very ancient site that was only discovered during the last century - it is well worth doing some research before you visit or you may be underwhelmed. Worth the effort only if you have a strong interest in Archeology or a lot of time to kill in Lima and want to see a very important rarely visited site. also, once you are out of Lima, it's a nice drive along the coast to get here.
  • Oldest city in the Americas. Old but interesting, especially the temples of sacrificial offerings.
