Visit La Isla De Los Monos, a family-run project that promotes the conservation and protection of native monkey species. Since its opening in 1997, the organization has been caring for abandoned or injured monkeys, with the goal of returning them to the wild. Take a boat trip by yourself or as part of a guided tour, explore the island, and meet its resident primates. You'll have the chance to interact with spider monkeys, howlers, tamarins, marmosets, and other native Peruvian species. You can roam the lush green jungle, hang out with the volunteers, and even volunteer yourself at the non-profit organization. Note: do not confuse this island with another of the same name, much closer to the port. Several reports cite poor conditions for the monkeys at the latter. This is rescue facility for monkeys run by volunteers. It is well run, with an emphasis on the safety and well-being of the animals. My 15 year old daughter loved it and didn't want to leave. more »
A happy place to learn about different species of monkeys. The organization receives monkeys who have been trafficked and works to release them when they are healthy. The entrance fee (30 soles for foreigners) includes a tour to meet monkeys being rehabilitated and a walk through the jungle to spot some of the monkeys that have been released. They let different monkeys out at different times so they can run around. Ben was a fantastic guide and the monkeys were very hands on! Give the downtown office a call; they're really helpful too. In the low season, they can help you get on a speedboat directly to the island at 9am and 11am. Our advice is to get here as early as possible because you'll never want to leave. Don't wear insect repellent, and remove jewelry and sunglasses before you arrive because the babies are naughty and like to steal things from you! Also bring some fruit as a donation!
The boat didn't collect me from Varadero. Waste of a day.
