  • A lot of religious art in a carved wood building. I've enjoyed the visit and even if youre not into religion it's nice to see the place.  more »
  • Cusco is a fantastic place to inspire artists, and the Olave family is a good example. His art is inspired by the colonial era of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, with a religious theme. The workshop is located on Plazoleta Street on the side of the Church of San Blas. Antonio Olave Palomino was heir to an ancient line of Cusqueños imaginers, born in the Pisac district of the Sacred Valley. His best known work was the "Manuelito boy", represented in various ways, from the most traditional to "the Dormidito", "El Sentadito" and "the one of La Espina". Within the Andean religious syncretism the child Jesus is identified by the name "Manuelito". The Manuelitos children are known around the world for their magical and wonderful details. The sweetness of the face of these rosacea leather images painted with great mastery and details such as the mirror palate, bird feather teeth, glass eyes and natural hairs have become the model that other artisans strive to achieve. In 1975, after the earthquake of 1950, some peasants in Vilcabamba asked him to restore the image of the patron Cristo Grande and the main altar of the church. That's when I heard the story of Q'alito, a playful boy who helped the little shepherds take care of their livestock. According to legend, one of the little shepherds was embedded in his foot, so he wept in pain. To comfort him, Q'alito purposely embedded a thorn in his saying, "I have a thorn too, don't be sad." Don Antonio was inspired by this story to create the Child of Thorn, now known in the world as one of the jewels of popular imagery. Olave was several times awarded and recognized in several countries in Europe and other places in the world for his fine work. It is worth visiting, as buying is another issue.

  • There are several painting shops here, some full of holes. I have asked a few, the most recommended is the old gentleman this, I bought a painting as high as me, the price is the same as the small one next door to sell (and the big one is also more beautiful)
