Trip Planner: South America / Peru / Cusco Region / Andahuaylillas / San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas
Dubbed the Sistine Chapel of America and built in the 16th century, San Pedro Apostol de Andahuaylillas hides within a quaint village but is a sight to behold. Judging from the simple brick and adobe exterior, the structure appears to be just an unassuming church, but once you step inside its nickname becomes clear. Baroque frescoes line the walls of the church, each depicting a part of the region’s history or representing an important part of the culture. The ceilings showcase Mudejar-style paintings, which involved cane, straw, and mud mediums. Even the altar impresses visitors with its gold, silver, and mirrored surfaces throughout. Cette petite église jésuite San Pedro du 17è siècle, en briques de boue séchées, aux murs épais, est surnommée la chapelle Sixtine du Pérou. Pourquoi ? The façade is not extraordinary, it is rather ordinary. The interior leaves you speechless as much by the quality - the richness of the works are incredible - unimaginable. The richly carved altar in a baroque style of cedar wood is covered with gold leaves. The paintings of the Cuzco School on the life of St. Peter adorned with large gilded frames, a painting of the Virgin of Ascension by the Spanish painter Murillo are superb. The ceiling is remarkable, painted with geometric shapes, and golden flowers in fine gold. The gilded wooden pulpit is also superb. In the sacristy one can admire the clothes of priests embroidered with precious metals. Its nickname of the Sistine Chapel of Peru is not usurped. There is gold everywhere. The décor of this small church is breathtaking as it is richly ornate - worked. There is no undecorated 1 cm2. It is surprising to find such a masterpiece in such a small village.
Bellissima chiesa coloniale in un piccolo paesino. La chiesa è ancora oggi gestita dai gesuiti e entrando è vietato fare fotografie o video. Merita davvero una visita perché è molto bella e d’effetto. more »Beautiful colonial church in a small village. The church is still run by the Jesuits and entering it is forbidden to take photographs or videos. It really deserves a visit because it is very beautiful and impressive.
