For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit The Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. Beautiful church with unique architecture, unfortunately, it was having a funeral and hence not open to visitors when we were here in September 2018. There is small parking behind the church, up the slope. To appreciate the exterior architecture, it is best to take photos from opposite side of the road, or even better, opposite side of the shore.
Unique architecture. Illuminated at night and can be seen from far away. Lots of tourists come there so if possible go at a time where there are no cruise ships in town.
