See an authentic reconstruction of a medieval stave church, known for its carved doorways and stylized dragon heads atop the roof, at Fantoft Stavkirke. Consul Fredrik Georg Gade bought the church in the 19th century and moved it, piece by piece, to the site in order to save it from demolition. Notice the stone cross from Tjora standing outside: similar crosses served as meeting points of religious congregations in times when there were no churches. In the early 1990s, some members of the Norwegian black metal scene set fire to the original church as an act of retribution for erecting Christian temples on pagan grounds. The church was rebuilt soon after. The site can be difficult to find, so follow road signs carefully. • A great example of this type of church. It is mostly a rebuild but has kept its authenticity. We travelled there by train from Bergen.  more »
  • to make a short visit, and to admire the characteristic architecture of these churches, to take into account that it is not the original but a copy after the original was burned

  • This church is so beautiful 😍 the carvings are so detailed and beautiful. The location is a little hidden, you have to follow a path into the woods and all of a sudden... there it is. There is a little cost to get in and see it and there are bathrooms close by - that was nice. Definitely worth the trip there! ❤️
  • The church has a very original look, interesting to stop by. You can walk inside. Expect buying a ticket to enter and take photos. While the original look was recreated by modern builders, unfortunately the old church burned down completely in 1992. No guided tours, but you can ask questions from the man/lady selling tickets.
