An impressive landmark of Pyongyang, Tower of the Juche Idea honors the country's "Juche" philosophy of unity, self-reliance, and self-defense. Take an elevator to the top of the 170 m (560 ft) tall tower to get a sweeping view of the huge city. The structure features a 20 m (66 ft) tall metal torch that glows at night, and 30 m (98.4 ft) tall sculpture of three standing figures raising a hammer, a sickle, and a brush high in the air. Erected in 1982 on President Kim Il-sung's 70th birthday, the monument lies next to the Taedong River, where locals come for a relaxing stroll. The structure is a must-see from its top.
