Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Auckland Region / Whangaparaoa / Shakespear Regional Park
Shakespear Regional Park is a nature park in the Auckland Region of New Zealand. It is located at the tip of the Whangaparaoa Peninsula, and is named after the Shakespear family which bought the land in the 1880s from local Maori. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Shakespear Regional Park and many more Whangaparaoa attractions: make an itinerary online using Inspirock's Whangaparaoa trip maker tool.
The Park is home to three walkways, Heritage Trail, Lookout Track and Tiri Tiri Track.
Another popular trail is ‘Waterfall Gully’ and after it has rained the waterfall does not disappoint.
Much of the coastline is lined by sandstone cliffs, which shelter the beach-lined Te Haruhi Bay.
At the Park's western border, a narrow lowland separates Okoromai and Army Bays.
The regional park largely lies within the Shakespear Open Sanctuary, the rest being taken up by the Tamaki Leadership Centre, a Royal New Zealand Navy base. A 1.7-kilometre (1.1 mi) pest/predator-proof fence (completed March 2011) across the peninsula between protects the park's wildlife. This includes resident invertebrates and lizards, along with birds migrating from the nearby Tiritiri Matangi island sanctuary. Brodifacoum poison airdrops were conducted in July 2011 to eradicate mammalian pests. The Shakespear Open Sanctuary Society has worked with the government landowners to establish and develop the sanctuary.
Shakespear Regional Park reviews
The Heritage trail is very nice and passes by a lovely waterfall. Continue on and you will meet up to the Lookout trail (worth doing) and you can walk down to the beach. There’s camping and I bet it..... more »
Very picturesque park and beach. Was not crowded at all the day we were there (Christmas Eve). This is very far from the typical Auckland sights, but the drive through Whangaparaoa is quite scenic. more »
Went with a friend to Shakespear Regional Park on a beautiful sunny weekend. The beach there was beautiful and there was plenty of parking for big families. There were barbecues available for families to cook their food and a lot of shade to cool down after spending time swimming and sunbathing. This is a beautiful place to take the family.
Great place to relax, just don't expect to have a picnic here as the birds will be presenting a little challenge to you. They roam freely so there's a fair amount of droppings everywhere and they are very much used to humans and getting free feeds.
