Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Bay of Plenty Region / Rotorua District / Waimangu / Waimangu Volcanic Valley
The result of a volcanic eruption from 1886, Waimangu Volcanic Valley represents the world's youngest geothermal system. The area features several lakes, including Frying Pan Lake--considered the world's largest hot spring, as well as a geyser, craters, and springs. In addition to hiking and bird-watching, you can also take a boat trip on one of the lakes to see the former site of the largest silica sinter deposits in the world, known as the Pink and White Terraces. Very interesting, both from the point of view of the geological and geothermal phenomena that can be observed there, as well as vegetation. The road has some slopes and stairs, although it can be done by anyone under normal conditions. The first two parts of the tour are the most interesting and there are most of the things to see. The third part, between stops 2 and 3 of the free bus to return to the visitor center, is expendable if you do not have much time.
Vooral het eerste gedeelte is echt schitterend en zeker de moeite waard. We hebben het park bezocht in de regen en waren de enige bezoekers. Het was een bijzonder bezoek met een spookachtige omgeving.... more »Especially the first part is really beautiful and well worth it. We visited the park in the rain and were the only visitors. It was a special visit with a ghostly setting. Recommended.
This is a must see! The park is beautifully maintained, staff are very good, and services offered are great. I highly recommend doing the boat tour at the end. Very informative and utterly stunning. Make this place a priority visit!
Easy enough walk up to the Inferno crater. Bus service back makes it even better. Gorgeous natural scenes with a well maintained gravel path to walk on. Some steep steps may make it difficult for elderly visitors.
