The result of a volcanic eruption from 1886, Waimangu Volcanic Valley represents the world's youngest geothermal system. The area features several lakes, including Frying Pan Lake--considered the world's largest hot spring, as well as a geyser, craters, and springs. In addition to hiking and bird-watching, you can also take a boat trip on one of the lakes to see the former site of the largest silica sinter deposits in the world, known as the Pink and White Terraces.   • Ever seen a lake so hot it was steaming. I have now! See hot water bubbling out of the ground, steaming hot lakes and steam rising from well, everywhere. It’s a long walk to see it all, but there is.....  more »
  • I hadn’t heard anything about this place but my kiwi friend said it was a must see. He was right. It’s a lovely downhill walk past a lot of thermal pools, streams etc. There is gurgling and spouting.....  more »

  • One of the coolest things I’ve ever seen! My jaw kept dropping the more we walked deeper in the park. Out of this world, literally felt as if I was on another planet.
  • Very nice walk (go for 1,5h one) with beautiful landscapes, streams and birds. It's an easy trail for with few places to rest and enjoy the scenery 😊
