Home to rare rowi kiwi birds, West Coast Wildlife Centre offers interactive experiences and a behind-the-scenes look at an award-winning hatching and incubation program. A popular all-weather attraction, this sanctuary provides a range of family-oriented activities, including self-guided nature walks, kid-friendly tours, and storytelling performances. The rarest of New Zealand's rare kiwi birds, the flightless rowi remains a critically endangered species, with less than 400 individual birds left in the wild. With the Franz Josef Glacier as a backdrop, this sanctuary is the only place in New Zealand where you can see this nocturnal animal in its natural setting. • Yes, you really do see endangered Rowi kiwi birds although we had to ask the attendant to pick them out with her special red-light torch. This place is not at all tacky or trashy although as often is the case the gift shop seemed expensive. We're pleased we went and it's not just for children. Happy to support this valuable conservation project.
  • Just paid for the regular tour. A little expensive for the amount of time you would usually spend, but the money does help with kiwi bird conservation and you can get a really good look at live kiwis so I think that it is still worth visiting. They also have an exhibition on the glacier that is very informative.
