Must see · Castle · Historic Site
Take in the 19th-century opulence and gorgeous gardens at Larnach Castle & Gardens, one of the largest mansions in New Zealand. Built in 1871 by politician and businessman William Larnach, the massive building has been gradually restored to its original splendor. Today, visitors can walk around the mansion to learn tales of scandalous history and to see sweeping views from the towers. The castle's sprawling grounds, named one of five Gardens of International Significance by the New Zealand Gardens Trust, include native and exotic plants and a number of specialized gardens, such as the Lost Rock Garden, the Serpentine Walk, and the Alice Lawn. • a great place to go. Kept the teenaged children occupied for a couple of hours wandering around the castle. The view from the top were great to see all around. Stopped in the CafĂ© for morning tea...  more »
  • We really enjoyed our visit to Larnach Castle. It was fascinating going over the house and reading the history. We also enjoyed following the garden trail and reading about the planting.  more »
  • I understand one must book many months on advance, as we did, to enjoy this breathtaking view, but it's worth it. Rooms are not on the castle itself, but in the Lodge or the Stables. Our room is in the Lodge. They are in the style of country estates, comfortable, good sized. Our view from Kate's Room are astounding. It is a time of relaxation and getting away. Our reservation includes breakfast in the lower part of the old stables, featuring an excellent Continental offering as well as options for several cooked items, all delicious. Lunch can be had for purchase in the cafe open daily for guests of the castle. And the special three course dinner, served in the original castle dining room, always has an opening if you are staying here, tho at the same cost as for those coming just for that. The tour of the castle was included and offered a special audio self- tour, which we really enjoyed. Then there was our tour of the many beautiful gardens. All in all, it has been a wonderful experience, and been a great finale to our month in the lovely country of New Zealand!
  • To see the once proud home restored from a livestock shed, is amazing. The family stories narrated by our guide Robyn (who had played here as children), brought it to life. The gardens were also beautiful!
