Stemming from the personal collection of the 19th-century geologist and explorer Julius von Haast, the museum now houses over two million artifacts. These range from geological treasures and dinosaur bones to Maori artwork and vehicles used for exploring Antarctica. Free guided tours are available on certain days; these are open to all, with no requirement to make reservations. Check the museum's website in advance for the days offered. All onsite facilities are designed to be accessible to visitors with disabilities. Good selection of items, varied displays. Great Antarctic section. The kids discovery space is always fun. I wish the toilets were closer to the kid's discovery space though! Cafe good value and quality coffee. Could do with more healthy variety of food for the kids. Really good gift shop.

Terrific museum highlighting NZ past flora and fauna and not forgetting the contribution of fairly recent settlers from Polynesia and Europe. Rich in detail with superb Antarctic explorer section with many many items from expeditions. Plus fine collection of vintage clothing ( upstairs) and superb furniture and silverware collection.
