Whakaari White Island Volcano
Possibly the most accessible live volcano in the world, Whakaari White Island Volcano was so named by Captain Cook because it always appeared to be in a cloud of white steam. Reach the crater by luxury motor boat or helicopter, and then explore the shifting, alien landscape on foot. With its ferocious steam vents, bubbling mud pits, hot volcanic streams, and lake of steaming acid, it's clear why the Maori call the island "Te Puia o Whakaari," or the Dramatic Volcano. If that's a little too adventurous for you, take to the skies in a seaplane for an aerial tour of the island and surrounding bay. The waters here are well known for their fishing, including yellowtail kingfish, marlin, and yellowfin tuna. Remember, the island is a protected reserve, so leave nothing but your footprints! Put Whakaari White Island Volcano and other Whakatane attractions into our Whakatane trip planning app, and watch your holiday take shape.

Awesome place to visit with a tour! The island is very unique. On the way back we saw dolphins chasing the boat.

It will be Long Trip to get there if you take a boat (and return) so it’s Pretty full on day but very enjoyable and worthwhile to be on an active Volcano. High chance of seeing dolphins or other ocean mammals. Tour guides that take you there are generally very knowledgeable (of course would depend on who takes you). Take all safety procurations that are given to you, I did need the mask at times as the fumes can be quite overpowering. I would highly recommend this trip to everyone, tourist or Kiwi. It is something you need to see (if you have money take a helicopter to make your day shorter).
