Trip Planner: South Pacific / New Zealand / North Island / Auckland Region / Auckland / Hauraki Gulf
Nestled into the coast of North Island, Hauraki Gulf and its islands represent one of the country's most ecologically diverse and rich areas. Much of the gulf is a designated marine park, which around 25 species of marine mammals call home. When taking ferries between the islands, keep your eyes peeled for schools of dolphins and orca whales, a relatively common sight. Many of the islands themselves serve as official or unofficial bird sanctuaries, providing a safe haven for critically endangered species. Make sure to pack a bathing suit as the area's beaches are renowned for their swimming and surfing opportunities. Gourmands may want to check out the wineries or breweries on Waiheke Island, the largest in the sound. Plan your visit to Hauraki Gulf and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Auckland online holiday maker .
