Ile Des Pins

4.3

L'ile la plus proche du paradis (the island closest to paradise)

Just a little way off the southern end of Grand Terre, Île des Pins (the Isle of Pines) gets its name from the tall columnar pines that stick out of the surrounding vegetation like bristles on a brush. These apparitions distinguish the island from its other South Pacific cousins, to which it otherwise bears a striking resemblance: empty white sand beaches and tranquil lagoons dyed an iridescent turquoise. In addition to the small population of friendly locals, often seen sailing their pirogues (traditional canoes) out on the lagoons, the island is scattered with hotels and gîtes (small holiday homes for rent), most operating restaurants that serve local delicacies like escargots or lobster. Venture into the lush interior to explore intriguing secrets such as dark caves and the crumbling ruins of a prison, slowly being reclaimed by the vegetation. Ile Des Pins is in New Caledonia.
