The National Museum of Nepal is a popular attraction of the capital city of Kathmandu. About a century old, the museum stands as a tourist destination and historical symbol for Nepal. Being the largest museum of the country of Nepal, it plays an important role in nationwide archaeological works and development of museums. For the residents of Kathmandu, the monument serves to relive the battles fought on the grounds of Nepal. The main attractions are collection of historical artworks and a historical display of weapons used in the wars in the 18-19th century. The museum has separate galleries dedicated to statues, paintings, murals, coins and weapons. It has three buildings — Juddha Jayatia Kala Shala, Buddha Art Gallery and the main building which consists of natural historical section, cultural section and philatelic section.The National Museum is under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. The museum has practical application in portraying and understanding the past and present traditions of the people of Nepal.HistoryThe National Museum of Nepal was established in 1928 by using an old building built in early 19th century. It was once a residence used by Prime Minister Bhimsen Thapa. The building has collection of bronze sculptures, paubha paintings and weapons including the sword gifted by King of France Napoleon Bonaparte. The museum then known as Chhauni Silkhana, literally meaning "arsenal museum", was originally used to display firearms and weapons used in the war history of Nepal.

  • this is very nearby swambhu nath temple one of the world heritage site in nepal. public transport is good .  more »
  • The statue sculpture of the Nepal is really wonderful. Especially, I think that the level of the Buddha image made by the pattern is the world's best. The origin is so valuable. However, there are some exhibits that the country feels poor, so it is better not to expect it.

  • Nepal’s National Museum is located a short walk south of Swayambhunath temple, and directly across Museum Road from the Nepal Army’s more modern Military Museum. There, at the end of a long white wall, you’ll find the ticket booth and the old museum’s main entrance gate.
  • I Feel nothing there (as a national museum standard) , it even cannot consider national museum. However the ticket is not expensive. If you really have free time you can visit it. For me i really feel that opposite Military Museum much better. Also, the local taxi driver cannot get it.
