  • Away from the main highways of Kathmandu, on a low hill is the Buddhist monastery of Kopan. It is not called ancient, it was founded in 1969 by two lamas who fled Tibet: the lama of Rinpoche and the Lama Jeshe. At their modest expense, they purchased an old house on the top of a hill with an adjoining plot from a royal astrologer. The first followers were children from the Manang regions at the foot of Annapurna and Sothukhumbu at the foot of Everest, who were traditionally sent to study in the monastery by their parents. However, in 1971, the lama of Rinpoche opened classes for Western students and these courses quickly gained popularity. Now on the site of an ancient shack stands the largest and richest Buddhist monastery of Nepal, there are regularly held lectures, practices and retreats for people from all over the world.
