Basantapur Tower, Kathmandu

#110 of 1,081 in Things to do in Kathmandu
Lookout · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
A World Heritage Site, Basantapur Tower has nine floors and overlooks the city through meticulously carved windows. Kings used this view, the legend goes, to see if all the chimneys in the city were smoking during meal times to make sure no one was hungry. Due to damage by an earthquake in 2015, much of the tower is closed to the public--but many of its the exquisite woodcarvings from the upper floors are now on display at the basement level. Walk around and inspect the elaborate ornaments with erotic images, marvelous doors, woodwork, and metalwork.
