Ashok Stupa Reviews
I was guided to this hidden Stupa by the earlier reviewer when we popped into the adjacent café/bar for a drink. The waiter kindly showed me to it and told me that it was only used on rare occasions. more »
I had read about the reconstruction of this Thamel stupa a couple of years after the 2015 earthquake. For local people it has a history, and they pitched in to rebuild the site. Smaller than the well ... more »
It is one of the four stupas built by the emperor Ashoka in 250 BC. When he turned to Buddhism he ordered to build over 80,000 shrines and temples in his empire and this stupa is one of them. It is the northern stupa. This stupa is comparatively more complex and smaller than other 3 stupas.
The Pristine One. This is one of four stupas (maybe 5 if there is a central one) built under King Ashok. This is the Northern one. It is the only one where the grassy mound has been entombed in white painted alabaster (?) and is pristine and well maintained compared to the others. The Eastern is known as Teta Thura, the Southern Lagan Thura and the Western (oppposite Labim Mall) is Ibahi. Worth exploring all 4 to see the scope of ancient Patan, cute ancient monuments and get off the tourist track. Google maps hasnt standardised so to find all four search " eastern ashok stupa" "lagan ashok" and "labim mall ashok". This Northern Ashok Stupa is 5 minutes from Patan Durbar square ask any local. 😃. Note the Eastern one is dusty and by a main road. The western one suffers from similar problems. Southern Lagan Ashok stupa is in a gated park and much more peaceful despite another main road nearby.
