  • Ai-Ais is the start or end point for the fabulous fish river canyon hiking. The place has a hot spring which is actually mostly dry during summer, as the rest of the fish river. Therefore paying.....  more »
  • Honestly we were dissapointed coming here. We heard good stories but the staff wasn't that friendly and actually everything was very outdated.  more »

  • Great hot water springs to enjoy the healing waters
  • Ai Ais used to be a popular destination, but it has been run down to a sad state. We stopped at Ai Ais as a home-base for the Fish River Canyon hike. After arriving later in the day, Reception was completely empty. We had to ask to be helped after considerable waiting. The campsites are hard, barren and dusty. At a cost of R210 per person per evening (as of Sept. 2019), this is a solid ripoff. The bathrooms are filthy and run down. The showers are clogged and hot water is not guaranteed. Sad, especially considering that EVERYTHING is covered in dust from the campsites. The shuttle to the start of the Fish River Canyon was R350pp for an hour long trip (after repeatedly being told it was R150pp). A SOLID ripoff. We climbed into a cramped Toyota Quantum and listened to hardcore COMMON rap/kwaito music for over an hour. **We were in the car over and hour as our driver stopped at the informal settlement to try and pick up more people (in our R350pp paid for shuttle).** What a joke. To finish off the trip, the car door was broken. All passengers had to climb over the front seat to exit. Truly pathetic. The Fish river canyon is in a poor state, but this is not Ai Ais at fault. After returning from the Hike, we had a cold beer and Chips at the restaurant. (At least the beer was cold). While sitting, birds were flying into the restaurant and pooping on seats, tables and floors. The glass lampshades are covered in bird Sh**. Not the kind of place that you want to eat at. Service is slow, unfriendly and you actively have to go ask for your change. Your waiter may just 'disappear' with your change.....as you "may not pay with a card for any purchase under R100 ". What kind of place does this??? The hot tubs......used to be nice. As of September 2019, they are heavily chipped. Pieces of tile are missing everywhere. During our stay, the pools were cold and almost empty, then half-run with cold water. On our third day they were so hot we had to get out. How is it possible for the water to be so bad on two ends of the heat spectrum???? Our experience at Ai Ais was not pleasant. Needless to say. Expensive, bad service (at the best of times), bad management, filthy. R210pp per night R350pp for a 80km shuttle R50 for a bag of wood. R20 for ice. R25 for beer. R15 for hot pools entrance. It is sad to see what bad management has done to a place that was once good. We will not be returning.
