Spitzkoppe, Damaraland

4.7
#4 of 101 in Outdoors in Namibia
Scamper around magnificent rock formations at Spitzkoppe, a series of granite peaks. Rising out dramatically from a flat, desolate landscape, the highest peak stands at 1,784 m (5,853 ft) above sea level, some 700 m (2,300 ft) from the desert floor below. See rock paintings by Khoi San people, some of which are several hundred years old, and enjoy the sight of dassie rats popping out of the cracks in the rock. This area offers high-grade rock climbs and great safari opportunities, but make sure to bring plenty of water with you. • Spitzkoppe is a special location. You see the mountains from a far as they rise in the desert. Camp locations are all great most in the shade of the mountain and rocks. Showers are only available at t...  more »
  • Definitely not the most luxurious campsite, but you should not miss it at all. The toilets are more or less just holes in the floor and running water is only available at the entrance. If you don't have a problem with this, you will have a wonderful time here. The campsite stretches for several kilometers and every single place is special. We camped under a big rock to have at least some shade. The landscape is breathtaking (not only the arch) If you want to have the right light for photos in the arch you should not be there after 16:00. My highlight was the starry sky at night. In winter you can probably also swim in the natural pools, in November there was unfortunately no more water there. If you want to do the children a favor in front of the entrance, you fill them with a canister of water. The water in the campsite can be drunk.

  • Magical sunset. Saw the Milky Way with bare eyes.
  • Very, very basic! No running water or electricity at campsites. Great climbing with our guide Richard Ford
