Bodhi Tataung, Monywa

#3 of 6 in Things to do in Monywa
Landmark · Tourist Spot
Take in a surreal and astonishing view at Bodhi Tataung, a renowned Buddhist region and monastery dominated by a 129 m (424 ft) tall golden standing Buddha. Built in 1995 to show gratitude to U Narãda, who built the original monastery, this is the second largest Buddha statue in the world, containing 31 internal stories, with an elevator allowing passage to the viewing point at the top. You can see many other astounding sights at the monastery, including a grove of more than 9,000 bo trees, a 69 m (225 ft) high golden pagoda, and thousands more depictions of the Buddha across the area. Consider taking the stairs to the top of the gigantic Buddha, where the paintings on each floor evoke the feeling of ascension and enlightenment.
