Built on a large scale by a king needing to impress and rebuild after defeat in battle, Mandalay deserves exploration. Though given an almost mythical air in a poem by Rudyard Kipling, the city was only established in 1857, and ruled by only one other king after the death of its founder, King Mingdon.
