Shwemawdaw Paya, Bago

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Bago
Admire the tallest pagoda in Myanmar at Shwemawdaw Paya, a glistening gold stupa that reaches an amazing 114 m (375 ft). Originally built in the 10th century, the structure has collapsed and been rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes, each time being rebuilt a little taller. In 1930, a devastating earthquake reduced the pagoda to nothing more than a mound of rubble, and it remained that way for around 20 years. Legend has it that the original 21 m (70 ft) tall structure was built to hold two hairs of the Buddha. Explore the grounds and find a peaceful shady spot to admire the view. Arrive early to beat the crowds and the midday heat. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Shwemawdaw Paya by using our Bago holiday tool .

  • At 114 metres high, this pagoda overlooks the famous Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon. One advantage here is that this monastery complex is not so crowded at wide and you can linger and take pictures here in peace. The entire complex has been recently renovated.
