Visit the oldest pagoda in Bagan, Buphaya Paya. Legend says that the king, having destroyed gourds (an infectuous plant) from the riverbanks, built the pagoda in the shape of that plant to celebrate his achievement. Take a look at the bulbous shape of the gilded dome, and experience the view, since the temple overlooks the river. Today's pagoda represents a reconstruction from 1975; the original was destroyed in an earthquake. Buphaya Paya is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

  • A small pagoda when compared to the other temples in the region. But that doesn't undermine its significance in any way. Situated next to the Irrawaddy river, this ancient pagoda has a slightly bell shaped casket like structure. Adjacent to it is a shrine dedicated to the holy spirit ,'Nat' , of the storms. Bu paya is clearly visible to a large distance down the river.
