Hercules Cave, Tangier

#1 of 7 in Parks in Tangier
See where the Ancient Greek demi-god rested before undertaking his 11th labor at Hercules Cave, a subterranean land of history and myth. The grotto has been formed by erosion and by human hand, with Berbers cutting chunks from the walls to make millstones. Today, the cave's atmospheric illumination creates an evocative environment in which to learn about the myths and history surrounding the site. One of two entries to the cave, the sea entrance has been named the "Map of Africa," thought to have been carved out by the Phoenicians to represent the continent when seen from the water. • A cave at the seaside . This was enlarged by people using the cave for "harvesting "mill stones . Great photo ops  more »
  • Totally worth going to see the cave- we had a cave guide as part of our day tour and he was super knowledgeable and took great photos! Love that this site was FREE!  more »

  • Not so special, but still a nice cave. Bring your tripod for good photos.
  • I agree with some other reviews. Not particularly much to see in the cave beside a whole that gives to the ocean and is represented in half of Morocco’s postcards. However, the view of the beach and the beach itself gift us a stunningly beautiful and peaceful moment. During busy times there might be queues to see the cave!
