Church of St. Luke, Kotor

3.8
Many churches feature tombs, but the entire floor at Church of St. Luke is covered in the tombstones of the citizens of Kotor, who were buried inside the church until the 1830s. The Romanesque-Byzantine church was built in 1195, making it the oldest worship site in the town. You can still see fragments of 13th-century frescoes on the southern wall. In the 17th century, the Catholics turned it over to the Orthodox Church but kept the right to have one altar for their own use until the mid-19th century. The Orthodox altar is the work of Dascal Dimitrije, the founder of the 17th-century Rafailovic school of painting. This is the only edifice in the town that did not suffer significant damage during the two major earthquakes. • There is a smaller Serbian Orthodox Church across the plaza St Luka's Church. I found this on the internet which is what our guide told us " The church was built in 1195 by tradesman Mauro Caccafrangi...  more »
  • Founded in 1195 in Nikora Square, this church has a calm atmosphere. There are frescoes and little to see, but the exterior matches the old town and can't be overlooked. It's a little too deep, but it's a small town, so if you walk, you'll get there.
