Church of St. Luke, Kotor

Religious Site · Tourist Spot
Many churches feature tombs, but the entire floor at Church of St. Luke is covered in the tombstones of the citizens of Kotor, who were buried inside the church until the 1830s. The Romanesque-Byzantine church was built in 1195, making it the oldest worship site in the town. You can still see fragments of 13th-century frescoes on the southern wall. In the 17th century, the Catholics turned it over to the Orthodox Church but kept the right to have one altar for their own use until the mid-19th century. The Orthodox altar is the work of Dascal Dimitrije, the founder of the 17th-century Rafailovic school of painting. This is the only edifice in the town that did not suffer significant damage during the two major earthquakes. • Stunning view and interesting history between kotor (and nearby places) and the repubblic of venice.
  • Interesting church will have 2 chapels inside - one for catholic and the other for Greek orthodox. Demonstrating the peaceful coexistence between the 2 religion in this town. The Guide shared the residents had bigger issues, such as against a common enemy Ottomans during its days to fight over their religion
