Kanli Kula Fortress, Herceg-Novi

#2 of 7 in Historic Sites in Herceg-Novi
Castle · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
Kanli Kula Fortress once served as a Turkish prison and dominates the city from a solid limestone rock above the sea. The foundations of the fortress were laid in medieval times, but the tower was erected during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century. The western part of the complex features the old cistern, which was once turned into a prison cell. On the interior walls, look for the drawings of ships, fish, crosses, names, and dates carved in plaster by the prisoners. Kanli Kula Fortress is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , online itinerary creator Edition.
