Njegos Mausoleum, Cetinje

Njegos Mausoleum, built into mountain rock, is dedicated to the greatest poet and ruler of Montenegro, high above valleys and highland woods. Climb 461 steps to the 1,657 m (5,436 ft) rugged mountain peak to get to this burial place, and look for a sarcophagus that preserves the ruler's remains. Inside the mausoleum, you'll also see a large granite statue of Njegos, carved by one of the greatest Croatian sculptors of the 20th century--Ivan Meštrović--and a golden mosaic with over 200,000 gilded tiles on the 9 m (30 ft) high ceiling. From the outside on a clear day you can see more than half of Montenegro, Albania, and Croatia.
