Transnistria
Known to some as Moldova's "breakaway state," Transnistria can feel like a completely separate country. While the UN does not recognize its independence, Transnistria maintains its own government, police, parliament, and currency. Most of the region's half-million residents are not Moldovan--they are fairly evenly split between Moldovans, Russians, and Ukrainians. Tourism here revolves around the 1990 Transnistria War, in which this region attempted to gain sovereignty. While there is no current conflict here, residents are still separatists. Don't leave without trying the locally crafted wine and cognac, which are good quality and quite inexpensive. Our Moldova holiday maker site combines visitor reviews with your personal interests to make an itinerary informed by experts, but tailored to suit your style.
