Landmark · Tourist Spot
At Los Voladores of Papantla, witness an ancient Mesoamerican ceremony that came about over half a millennium ago and is still performed today. According to legend, the ceremony started when the gods brought a drought upon the people. It was created in order to ask the powers above to bring back the rain. During the ceremony, five men climb to the top of a 30 m (98 ft) tall pole. Four of the men launch themselves from the top and decline to the ground via rope, while the fifth stays atop the pole and dances while playing the flute. The ritual was named an intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO. Make Los Voladores of Papantla part of your personalized Veracruz itinerary using our Veracruz trip maker app.

  • I am sure that there are plenty of people who find or would find these voladores fascinating. I am not one of them. Watching a bunch of guys circle a pole is boring.  more »
