Occupied since 1400 BCE, Chiapa de Corzo serves as a major archaeological site containing the earliest inscribed date and earliest Mesoamerican tomb burial. It also represents the oldest colonial town in the state of Chiapas and serves as a gateway for trips into the Sumidero Canyon. Visit the town's main plaza to see the large colonial mudejar-style brick fountain with its octagonal design, arches, buttresses, and domed roof. Nearby you can dine on cuisine found only within the region or visit the local museum.
