Its name meaning "White Caves" in the Yucatec Maya language, Cenotes Sac Actun represents an underwater cavern system near Yucatan’s Caribbean coast. Explore a part of the massive 230 km (143 mile) cave system, and visit the Sac Actun cenote. Swim in the underground freshwater basins and streams, dive in the interconnected cenotes, or snorkel to see small fish swim along the roots and vines. Admire the vast caverns, adorned with stalactites and stalagmites, or try to spot the sea turtles that can be found near the opening of the cenote. My wife and three children went to Sac Actun in April and it was amazing. The caves were incredible and I’ll never forget looking off into the infinity of the underwater river system. Our guide’s name was Rodrigo and he was great. He was extremely nice and accommodating, and was full of all kinds of fun tidbits of info about the local flora and fauna (bats!). I highly recommend doing this if you are in the Yucatán.
Be ready to be treated badly. It took us good 20 min off road drive to get there. It is relatively pricy (450 pesos entry plus 200 for a wet suit (much needed). But they did a lot of work lightening up the underground cave, so money were well spent. It is a loop with entrance into two large and beautiful fully closed underground caves. From outside you can’t judge how interesting it would be. Pros: unique experience, stalactites (on the ceiling) & stalagmites (on the cave floor), snorkelling from narrow path to a huge cave.. I liked the guide (Antony). Cons: guys in the red shirts (the ones taking the money) were extremely (and unnecessary) RUDE.
