Stand under the shade of Tule Tree, a Montezuma cypress situated in church grounds. With a diameter of 9.38 m (30.8 ft), the cypress is considered by many to be the stoutest tree in the world. Local Zapotec legend has it that the tree was planted around 1,400 years ago by a priest of Ehecatl, the Aztec wind god. Most scientific estimates support the Zapotec's belief, and its position on a sacred site, now a Roman Catholic Church, suggests there could be some truth in the legend surrounding its origin. for me at least. I could have sat and looked at this Tule Tree for hours and hours. It was so special to see and then meeting little 6 year old Cynthia with her laser was very rewarding. She goes... more »
This tree is a must-see. It's over 1,600 years old and is the widest tree in the world. Great for all ages. No need to spend much time here but there's a small church and garden here too. more »
Kind of a must see, tourist cliche. Big old tree with a little town attached. Students with top grades may be your guides. They have a memorized tour speech delivered in machine gun speed English. Cute kids but struggle if they go off script. Only an arborist would spend more than 30 minutes here.
This is the thickest tree I've seen my whole life. You can no longer touch it since now its gated. Still is truly spectacular. Also nearby there is a ice cream place inside a Mercado which has authentic Oaxaca ice cream. Dare to try something different, you wont be disappointed.
