#5 of 17 in Historic Sites in Oaxaca
Witness grand 17th-century architecture at Basilica de la Soledad, located Oaxaca city's historic center, which has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Built between 1682 and 1690 from green cantera stone, the church is laid out in the shape of a Latin cross. Admire the church's baroque exterior, with its spires and towers intentionally sitting low to withstand earthquakes. The facade displays statues of religious icons, including the Virgin Mary. Inside, head to the west gallery and find an organ that dates back to 1686. • A beautiful and historic church. No admission charge. Outside of it is a plaza filled with food stands, most seemed to be selling ice cream.  more »
