Must see · World heritage site · Ruin · Historic Site
Within Mexico's largest tract of tropical jungle lies Calakmul, site of one of the largest and most powerful Mayan cities. In 1931, excavation here unearthed temples, burial crypts, and over 6,000 buildings of the ancient city. Climb two of the tallest Mayan pyramids ever discovered, and enjoy the views from atop. Count over 120 stelae (commemorative stone slabs), more than at any other Mayan site; some date back to 435 CE. The region surrounding the site is rich in wildlife, including spider monkeys, anteaters, and countless species of birds.
