St Louis Cathedral, Port Louis

#3 of 6 in Historic Sites in Port Louis
Church · Hidden Gem · Tourist Spot
One of the oldest churches in Mauritius, St Louis Cathedral serves as a quiet place of meditation. The present Roman Catholic cathedral was built in 1933, after frequent cyclones destroyed earlier edifices from the 18th and 19th centuries. The oldest part of the church is an 18th-century obelisk fountain with four lion heads on each side, located just opposite the entrance. The interior of the church features statues of saints and stained glass windows depicting biblical scenes. Rest and contemplate in the small garden area in front of the church. • Must see for anyone as it is the only cathedral in Mauritius. As usual inside a cathedral it is always "grand" although at Louis would be on a lesser scale.Definitely had an "atmosphere" inside...
  • Beautiful cathedral. Different from any other cathedrals you may expect in Europe. Peaceful spot in the noise of Port Louis centre
