Chinguetti Mosque, Chinguetti

3.4
#2 of 7 in Historic Sites in Mauritania
Dating from the 13th century, Chinguetti Mosque represents one of the world's oldest Muslim religious buildings. Pay special attention to its original square minaret, considered the second-oldest in the world, the split-stone masonry, and the lack of adornment--in accordance with the city founders' Malikite beliefs. Go inside and see the symmetrical structure, with four aisles and the mihrab traditionally pointing towards Mecca. Visit the peaceful courtyard, where you can enjoy the silence and soak in the atmosphere. • Nice treasure in the Sahara amazing place with a great history forgotten among the dunes, a shame that they approach so few tourists. Very cheap everything and safe.

  • The small mosque is right next to the Chinguetti library. To look pretty from the outside, but as a European you are unfortunately not allowed to enter them. On our visit, we were surrounded all the time by an incredible number of children who wanted to sell us something. That annoyed a bit, but you get used to it.
