Old Prison in Victoria, island of Gozo, Victoria

#1 of 7 in Museums in Victoria
The Old Prison is located in the Citadel of Victoria, Gozo, adjacent to the Courts of Justice to which it was originally connected. Today, the prison complex is divided into two different buildings: the entrance hall, which had been a common cell in the 19th century, and a free-standing block with six individual cells.

The prison was active from the mid-16th century until 1962.
First, it used to host the rowdiest or most riotous knights, as a place to cool down. Even the most historical knight, Fra Jean Parisot de Valette (later Grand Master of Malta) was imprisoned there in 1538.
The site is well preserved in its original state, and one can find a large amount of graffiti etched into the limestone walls. Representations are often of ships, hand-prints, crosses, names, dates, games, and anthropomorphic figures.

  • Definitely not something you'll typically see when visiting historical sites but this one is really interesting to get an idea of how criminals were kept/treated. It is also included as one of the sites to visit when you buy a ticket to see the exhibits in the Citadel. If you have access, I would recommend visiting it because the doors, cells and set up all help you get a better appreciation for prisons at the time.
  • Not much to see (a couple of corridors and a few cells, plus a small cabinet of exhibits in the entry hall), but the medieval prisoners' graffiti (mostly ships carved into the stone walls) are interesting, and the stocks outside are a fun photo op. Admission is included in a 5 euro ticket that also covers four other little museums in the citadella.
