Lemuria Land, Nosy Be
Watch eight different species of lemurs among the ancient cananga trees at Lemuria Land, a private zoological and botanical park. Chameleons, crocs, tortoises, Madagascar red toads, and Malagasy snakes call the site home, and you can also explore a collection of insects and beetles here. Horseback riding is offered and there are some boat trips to the nearby island. Sample some ylang-ylang essential oils and rum made in the distillery located on the premises founded in 1889 by French missionaries. Trying to sell below par animal treatment as conservation, it happens all too often. This park is supposed to be a tourist attraction, where they catch wild lemurs to display in tiny cages and small islands. There's crocodiles that are being poked with sticks to get a response, tortoises up for petting and more beautiful animals that should be living in the wild instead of in pens. And the weird thing, the magnificent Lokobe Reserve is just around the corner. I can slightly understand the purpose of a zoo in countries where there's no lions, elephants, lemurs or crocodiles, but I fail to see the point of captivating animals, whilst they freely roam about on the same island... Please do not support this and make a wiser choice by going to the Lokobe Reserve. That's where the conservation takes place.
