Gediminas Castle Tower, Vilnius

Perched atop a hill on the site of a medieval castle, Gediminas Castle Tower today offers both sweeping views of Vilnius and represents one of the city's (and the country's) most enduring symbols. Originally a part of a 15th-century brick fortress, the tower's current iteration is the result of a reconstruction in 1930. Wander the path from the base of the hill to the tower and be rewarded with panoramic views of Vilnius' old and new areas, as well as the surrounding hills. Climb to the top of the structure for completely unobstructed views. Be sure to take a look at the small archaeological and historical exhibitions within, detailing the origins and history of the tower, as well as Lithuania's split from the Soviet Union in 1990. • .. or fast on a cable car. The views from here are amazing. The entrance to the tower itself is 5 degrees per person. They did not rise, and without rising everything looks very good at sunset. The main climb is now closed, but there are signs where to go to climb. You can walk, or you can climb and go down on the cable car for 2 degrees. I recommend visiting!

  • Good views across Vilnius from the top. The stairs are very narrow and there are quite a lot of steps to climb. Interesting section about The Baltic Way which was informative. You can get a furnicular...  more »

  • As one of the landmarks of the city you’d be crazy not to pay a close up visit to this site. There’s a choice of routes up to the tower - either the funicular which costs a few Euros extra, or walking up the steep cobbled hill. The walking route is tough to begin with but soon turns into steps and a proper constructed path, but if uneven walking or steps are difficult then the funicular is the way to go. Once at the top of the hill there’s a great view of the eastern part of the city. The tower itself and building work prevent a view over the Old Town but I’d recommend heading to the top of the tower to get the view. Upon entering I was directed to the ticket counter where a €5 fee got me a chance to climb to the top. You aren’t given the chance to climb before entering the ground floor and the direction of new visitors is controlled by the staff on the door. There’s a gift shop on the ground floor and some displays on the floors up above. These are interesting but it’s clear most visitors are interested in the views from the windows, or wanting to reach the top of the stairs to the summit. The stairs themselves are steep and narrow and although the lack of control for people climbing and descending wasn’t great, there was enough width to let most crowds pass without too much issue. Once at the top the view is as good as it gets of the city. It’s a true 360 degree perspective and the top of the castle is large enough to mean it’s not crowded, even during busy periods. With a perspective over the Old Town, the city to the north and the forest it’s easy to spend quite some time at the top admiring the views so fortunately there’s no limits on time etc. The descent down is a lot quicker and easier, but again it’s navigating the steep steps. For the ticket price charged it’s a good value experience. Given that you’re free to spend as much time as you like at the top, and the views are decent, with some good displays on the way up, I’d certainly class it as a ‘must-do’ in the city and would love to return.
  • What an amazing place! Panoramic view around Vilnius. Friendly, very helpful staff. There is even a cable car, to climb the mountain! The park is so quiet and nice. There is even a beautiful river crossing the park. Churches and museums all around. Mandatory, when visiting Vilnius!!
