The erstwhile political epicenter of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Trakai Island Castle Museum today provides a striking example of an island fortress in Europe and remains one of the country's most famous symbols. Built in several stages beginning in the 14th century, the castle fell into ruin during the 1600s; however, a major push after World War II led to its complete restoration. Cross the wooden bridge to access the castle and its massive defensive towers and gate, situated on a tiny islet just offshore from its namesake town. Within the walls lies yet another fortified bastion. Wander its multiple floors and view exhibitions displaying medieval artifacts, armor, and weapons. The site documents both the history of the castle and its role in the nation's past. Be sure to stop by the grand hall, where rulers such as national hero Vytautas held feasts and state meetings. In Vilnius we pick up public transport with ease and low cost. From the bus station to the castle it is very well on foot, and the walk through the small village is fascinating, passing through colorful houses, in a very quiet environment. Around the lakes, the scenery is beautiful and has places conducive to beautiful photos. I definitely recommend it.

From the outside it's really nice. The interiors reconstructed and furnished to give the appearance of how you could live in the Middle Ages a little less, but still interesting. On a fabulous panoramic and photographic level
We liked the place very much. The combination of the castle and the lake is very pastoral. The castle inside is very interesting. The collection of treasures is impressive. Afterward we had a short swim in the lake and it was really nice.
Visiting after almost 20 years, have changed a lot, nice boat activities around the castle, castle it self well looked after. Beautiful castle of Trakai, a must visit place if you visiting Lithuania. Enjoyed every second. Will come back when in Lithuania.
