  • Aammiq wetland, located in Aammiq village (West Bekaa), is one of the most biodiversity rich sites in Lebanon. The wetland is nestled between the fertile agricultural fields of the Bekaa valley and the rocky oak forest slopes leading to the heights of the majestic Barouk ridge. The wetland is a private ownership that was protected since the end of the Lebanese war in 1990 by private efforts. Aammiq wetland is a Ramsar site since 1999. In addition, the site is an Important Bird Area (IBA); in 2005, UNESCO declared Aammiq wetland a part of the Shouf Biosphere Reserve (SBR). It is one of Lebanon’s best places to observe wildlife and conduct scientific research on biodiversity. Aammiq wetland is particularly famous at migration time for large flocks of White Storks, Pelicans, Eagles, Buzzards and water birds. Beside birds’ species, Aammiq wetland is a habit for a wide variety of reptiles, mammals, butterflies, dragonflies, amphibians, fish, flowers and plants. Long term conservation of Aammiq wetland necessitates a public law. The wetland owners and managers should work more on the development and regulation of responsible tourism activities, focusing on nature and education. Furthermore, we noticed that new technologies are not used in Aammiq; we recommend that the site owners and managers start to use more innovation and technologies for a more effective management, especially in the case of tourism activities monitoring and regulation! • Ammiq Wetland is the last significant wetland in Lebanon. We will have an easy hike in the beautiful nature getting to see the swamp, the bird watching tower, and the farm. The trail is flat and about 5 km long suitable for all people. Also you have an option to rent a bike for an extra charge of 10,000 L.L. / Hour.
