Jeita Grotto, Jitta

Fantastic rock formations and stalactites grow underground in Jeita Grotto, a set of natural underground caves visitors can explore on foot and by boat. Formed over thousands of years of dissolution of the limestone layer, the caves were discovered in the late 19th century. Evidence of prehistoric, early Bronze Age use permeates the site, which includes a lower chamber filled with a naturally occurring lake which visitors traverse on small guided rowboats, and an upper dry chamber linked by walkways. Photography isn't permitted within the grottos, but you can stash your cameras and backpacks in the lockers available near the entrance. • On a group trip in Lebanon and thanks to the fact that this was a group trip I was allowed to see, admire these caves ... If I had been here alone, I would have skipped this attraction for sure because now say for myself ... Who's seen a dozen caves, she's seen it all, right? NO, no, no, no, no, no These caves were by far the most beautiful ever seen for me. Really impressive.

  • We visited the caves during a day trip out from Beirut which included also Byblos and Harissa. The caves were in two sections, the lower caves and the upper caves in which we had to take a cable car. ...  more »
  • Visiting Jeita Grotto was the most beautiful experience while visiting Lebanon. It's difficult to express my experience so have a look at the pictures I took there, though it wasn't allowed to carry a camera but luckily I managed after talking to staff there. Highly recommended to visit this place if you go Lebanon.
  • Amazing . Just amazing. You can go there and look at what a wonderful thing nature is . Beneath the mountains so huge caves you can just walk in and see some splendorous nature creations. There is a boat ride inside which will take you into the marvellous case created by limestone. It takes thousands of years for that to happen and you are lucky to see them. Pictures are not allowed but you can sneak in your phones and get for your pictures but make sure you don't get noticed.
